Review by Sergio Martínez
The 46th edition of the Montreal International Jazz Festival
filled the city’s streets with music and colour from June 25 to July 4. Once
again, this event—which has become one of the city’s most iconic—left a lasting
impression, both for the quality of the performances and the musical variety on
offer. In addition to renowned jazz artists such as the Charles Lloyd Quartet,
attendees had the opportunity to enjoy urban sounds with Latin roots, such as
those of the Astor Piazzolla Quintet and the Mexican artist Lila Downs.
As always, in addition to the indoor concerts, the festival
featured a wide range of free performances on stages set up around the Place
des Festivals, including the Latin American groups La Murga Ensamble, Anamaria
Oramas from Colombia, and Chicha Libre.
Among the Latin performances presented this year, the Gran
Combo from Puerto Rico stood out in particular; they performed at the Salle
Wilfrid Pelletier at Place des Arts on June 29.
This year’s special event was headlined by the local Quebec
group Angine de Poitrine, which drew a large crowd.
