MOTHERING SUNDAY: Recuerdos en tres tiempos

Dirigida por Eva Husson y basada en la novela de Graham Swift, Mothering Sunday cuenta la historia de Jane Fairchild (Odessa Young), que es una empleada doméstica. Estamos en 1924 y ella trabaja para los Nivens (Colin Firth y Olivia Colman). Como mucha gente de la época, los Nivens aún sufren los efectos emocionales de haber perdido a su hijo durante la Gran Guerra.

Aprovechando el Domingo de las Madres -un evento tradicional inglés, con una connotación más religiosa que el Día de la Madre en América del Norte o América Latina- Jane aprovecha su día libre para pasar la tarde haciendo el amor con Paul Sheringham (Josh O'Connor), un vecino de los Nivens. De todos los jóvenes del condado, Paul es uno de los pocos que ha conseguido sobrevivir a la guerra. Esto le ha creado un cierto sentimiento de culpa de superviviente y ha aumentado su sentido del deber hacia su familia. Parte de ese deber será casarse con una mujer de su misma posición social. También planea convertirse en abogado. Al mismo tiempo, sin embargo, Paul y Jane mantienen su relación amorosa secreta.

Un giro inesperado de los acontecimientos ese mismo día, cuando las dos familias regresaban de una excursión, cambiaría las cosas para Jane. Unos días más tarde, ella dejará la mansión del condado para trabajar en una librería. Esto también nos lleva a un nuevo momento de la historia.

Jane ha conocido a Donald (Sope Dirisu), un filósofo que acaba animándola a escribir. Donald se está muriendo de cáncer y Jane quiere seguir su consejo y escribir. Esto nos lleva al tercer momento de la narración, ambientado en los años ochenta, cuando Jane (ya anciana, interpretada por Glenda Jackson) es abordada por los periodistas tras ganar un prestigioso premio literario. Ella no parece muy impresionada; ha ganado numerosos premios literarios.

Mothering Sunday nos ofrece un vívido retrato de la joven que busca el placer sexual, y el hecho de que esté desnuda en la habitación es una celebración visual de la belleza. La fotografía, en este caso, es crucial. Sin embargo, todo parece ir demasiado rápido en los dos últimos segmentos de estos recuerdos. El espectador nunca ve el desarrollo de la relación con Donald ni su transformación en una escritora famosa. Todo ello queda compactado por exigencias de tiempo, dejando la sensación de que falta algo.

MOTHERING SUNDAY: Memories in three times

Directed by Eva Husson and based on the novel by Graham Swift, Mothering Sunday tells the story of Jane Fairchild (Odessa Young), who is a housemaid. It is 1924, and she is working for the Nivens (Colin Firth and Olivia Colman). Like many people at the time, the Nivens are still suffering the emotional effects of having lost their son during the Great War.

Taking advantage of Mothering Sunday –a traditional English event– Jane uses her day off to spend the afternoon making love with Paul Sheringham (Josh O'Connor), a neighbour of the Nivens. Of all the young fellows in the county, Paul is one of the few who managed to survive the war. This has created a certain sense of survivor guilt and enhanced his sense of duty toward his family. Part of that duty would be to marry a woman of his own social standing. He also plans to become a lawyer. At the same time, however, Paul and Jane keep their secret love affair.

An unexpected turn of events that same day, when the two families were returning from an outing, would change things for Jane. A few days later, she would leave the county manor to work at a bookshop. That also takes us to a new moment in the story's time.

Jane has met Donald (Sope Dirisu), a philosopher who eventually encourages her to write. Donald is dying of cancer, and Jane would follow his advice and write. This leads us to the third moment in the narration, set in the 1980s, when Jane (in old age, played by Glenda Jackson) is being approached by journalists after winning a prestigious literary award. She doesn't seem much impressed; she has won numerous literary prizes.

Mothering Sunday provides us with a vivid portrayal of the young woman seeking sexual pleasure, and her standing naked in the room is a visual celebration of beauty. The cinematography, in this case, is crucial. However, everything seems to go too fast in the last two segments of these memories. The spectator never sees the development of the relationship with Donald or her transformation into a famous writer. All of that is compacted due to time requirements, leaving behind a sense of something missing.
