MOVIES AT LA PLAZA: FANTASIA FESTIVAL—“CIELO”

Movie Review by Sergio Martinez

Directed by Spanish director Alberto Sciamma, this British-Bolivian co-production is filmed and set in Bolivia. The screenplay was also written by Sciamma, who synthesizes very well in the images of the desolate altiplano, the vicissitudes of the young protagonist of the story: Santa (Fernanda Gutiérrez Aranda), a nine-year-old girl who, accompanied first by a fish she carries in a bucket, sets out for the sea. Along with her, she carries the body of her mother, which she has preserved in salt.

Framed by a narrative of magical realism, the story will show Santa making a deal with the parish priest of the abandoned village (Luis Bredow), and then, when the van she drives no longer works, she is helped by a troupe of wrestlers led by La Reina (Mariela Salaverry), and finally, after it is discovered what Santa was carrying in a barrel, she ends up arrested along with the wrestlers at the town police station.

The stay in the police station will put Santa in contact with the officer in charge of the barracks (Fernando Arze Echalar) with whom at the beginning things are not going to go very well. However, after a road accident that almost cost her her life, it will be with him and La Reina that the girl will seek to realize the purpose of her long journey with her mother's body.

Cielo was screened a couple of times at the festival and received a very good reception from the audience. It is a film with very beautiful images and an impressive performance by Fernanda Gutiérrez in the lead role, with a story that combines mythical elements, dreamlike images and a good dose of magical realism. We hope it can be commercially released in Canadian theaters because, although it takes place in a very specific scenario, its subject matter can be very universal.

Running time: 108 min.
