Chronicle by Sergio Martínez
The 15th edition of the Montreal ComicCon took place from
July 4 to 6 at the Palais de congrès, already the traditional venue for this
event that brings together fans and followers of a wide variety of what is
called popular culture. From comic books and their most emblematic characters,
such as Superman, Batman or Spider-Man, who have now also jumped to other
platforms such as cinema and television, to video games, TV series and
characters from Japanese popular culture: manga and anime, all present at this
event.
By the way, a fundamental element of ComicCon is the high
degree of participation of the attendees who literally “get into” the fantasy
of the characters and scenarios of popular culture by dressing up as their
favourite characters.
As always, this edition also featured the presence of
important exponents of popular culture, such as Andy Serkis, William Shatner,
Famke Janssen, Elijah Wood, Billy Boyd, Ian McDiarmid and Sean Astin, among
others.
There was also an impressive array of activities, ranging
from the opportunity to share with some of the celebrities to informative
sessions with practical value for many who want to get started in the world of
popular culture, from creating scripts and illustrations for comics to how to
publish on Amazon.
All this in a festive atmosphere, with a familiar air and
with the interesting realization that in many of the kiosks where a diversity
of merchandise was offered, local artistic creation abounded—indeed, a good
sign of creativity in Quebec and Canadian popular culture. As an interesting note, numerous ironic
references to the current situation were created between Canada and the United
States regarding Donald Trump's threats to annexe this country. In the Captain Canuck
kiosk, there was a forceful response.
